BHOPAL/GWALIOR: The Madhya Pradesh high court remarked against the Madhya Pradesh police in harsh words on Friday during the hearing of the petition of a minor girl missing for five years, remarking, "There is no one to police the policeman in this state." The HC division bench criticized police for failing to trace the 17-year-old girl who went missing from Guna district. Her father had filed a habeas corpus petition before the Gwalior bench in 2017. The court noted that three SITs were formed and police had a man's statement that the girl had been raped and murdered, yet the cops couldn't find any trace of her and haven't even registered an FIR. "The case made no progress and that shows the incompetence of police officials, who were members of the SITs," reads the order. The first SIT was led by a subdivisional police officer, the second by an ASP and the third time by the Guna SP. "We are constrained to observe so, despite repeated orders by this court, DGP Madhya Pradesh since the year 2020 has maintained blissful silence for reasons best known to him. We may hasten to add that complaints of inaction or polluted action by police are invariably brought to the notice of this court in different jurisdictions. We take strong exception to the functioning of the police force in the state, particularly in Guna district, relevant to the facts of this case," the division bench, comprising Justice Rohit Arya and Justice Milind Ramesh Phadke, observed. If required, the DGP can be called for personal appearance, the court added. "Safety and protection of the public against invasion on their personal liberty and property appears to be seriously jeopardized," they said. Guna police say that Sonu Kalawat, the suspect named by the petitioner, was arrested but there was no evidence of his hand in her disappearance. The district court rejected a police proposal for his narco test as he refused to give consent. Police have examined DNA samples of bodies found in different locations over the last few years, but none of them matched the missing girl. "We are trying our best," ADG D Srinivas Verma. He had appeared before the court on Friday.
