MP State Government issues advisory after lumpy skin disease spreads in State and bordering areas

Madhya Pradesh: In view of the confirmation of lumpy skin disease in the bordering states of Madhya Pradesh, the state government has issued an advisory. Regarding the advisory issued by the Government of India, the concerned officers of the Animal Husbandry Department have been asked to always be vigilant for the identification and control of the disease according to the guide-line. On seeing the symptoms, collect the samples and send the information in the prescribed form to the State Animal Disease Investigation Laboratory, Bhopal. Lumpy skin disease is a viral disease of animals, which is spread from animal to animal by Pox virus, mosquito, fly, etc. In the beginning, mild fever lasts for two to three days. After this, lumps of 2-3 cm come out in the skin of the whole body. These lumps are raised round, which goes deep into the muscles along the foreskin and extends to the mouth, throat and respiratory tract. Also lymph nodes, swollen legs, decreased milk production, miscarriage, infertility and sometimes even death of the animal.

Director Dr. RK. Mehia said that most of the infected animals recover in two-three weeks, but the decrease in milk productivity persists for several weeks. The mortality rate is one to 5 percent and the infectivity rate is 10 to 20 percent. The data on infection rate and mortality rate is sent to DHAD in the prescribed format. Immediately isolate the infected animal from the healthy animal. Take necessary steps to prevent the spread of disease in the infected area. Restrict the movement of animals from the infected area to other areas. There should be a complete ban on the sale of animals, animal exhibition, animal related games etc. in the market of the infected area. While taking samples of infected animals, take all protective measures including PPE kits. Use of cleaning, bactericidal and disinfectant chemicals in the infected animal farm, house etc.
